Adu Gindy, painting
Aaron Sober, ceramics
Our featured artists both incorporate images
of animals into their work – playful, mystical, disconcerting, peaceful, and thought-provoking.
Minneapolis painter Adu Gindy traces her use of animal imagery to her
childhood in WWII Europe, which “made me look inside myself and
resort to the escapism of my imagination for contentment.” Gindy’s
dreamlike works veer between the abstract and the figurative, conveying
a sense of childlike innocence and spontaneity. Formerly an assistant
professor at the University of MN, Duluth School of Fine Art, Gindy’s
work is included in numerous permanent collections including the
Minnesota Museum of American Art, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum,
and the Walker Art Center.
Potter Aaron Sober uses surface decoration to infuse his functional,
salt-fired pots with grace and humor – strange animals and
thorny plants abound, bucktooth rabbits sit on the sides of mugs,
mysterious ravens wrap around jars. Aaron graduated from Macalester
College with a degree in Studio Art in 2001, and then spent several
years studying at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, and
creating his own work at the Northern Clay Center in Minnesota. Recently
relocated to Maine, we are delighted to bring Aaron and his work
back to MN for this show.
