Phyllis Wiener Bio

Phyllis WienerSunstruck

Phyllis Wiener was one of the first female painters in Minnesota’s abstract art movement, and at 86 years old is still creating new work and experimenting with new directions.  Phyllis studied with Cameron Booth at the University of Minnesota in the 1950’s, during the heyday of abstract expressionism.  She was one of the founding members of the Women’s Artist Registry of Minnesota.  Since those years, her work has shifted toward representational painting and landscapes, back to abstraction, and more recently into three-dimensional, sculptural work.  “I am still at it – still playing with space,” she says.

The show of Phyllis’ work at The Grand Hand includes both paintings and sculptural work.   “We are excited to use our new NORTH Gallery as a showcase for Phyllis’ extraordinary work,” said gallery owner Ann Ruhr Pifer.  “This space, reminiscent at it is of a small “black box” theatre, seems to make Phyllis’ work come alive in all of it’s exuberant color and bold design – almost as if the pieces are dancing right off the walls.”

Phyllis Wiener’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the U.S. and in Europe, including the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Minnesota Museum of American Art, and the Fredrick R. Weisman Art Museum.  Major retrospective shows of her work have been presented by Macalester Galleries at Macalester College, and the Katherine Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota.  Her work is included in numerous permanent collections, including the Minnesota Historical Society, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Walker Art Center, Mayo Clinic, Briggs and Morgan law firm, Lutheran Brotherhood, Total Petroleum Company, 3M Company, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum.

This show is presented in association with Susan St. John & Assoc. Private Art.
