Walter Piehlnew2

North Dakota artist Walter Piehl’s paintings capture the explosive action of the rodeo, and the dynamic interaction between horse and rider.  A professor of art at Minot State University, Piehl received his MA in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Dakota, and completed graduate work at the University of Minnesota in Lithograph and Intaglio.

On the occasion of a solo retrospective show of Piehl’s work at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, CEO Edward Pauley wrote:

“Boldly executed, Piehl’s works demand immediate attention…Layers of juxtaposed and vibrant color awaken the senses. Spontaneously drawn contour and gesture lines, accented by experimental marking,, suggest (rather than fully define) rapid action and emerging forms.  The physical boundaries between the protagonists are often lost as they come together to form a sequence of repeated images... With Piehl, the distinction separating confident mastery and the childlike need to discover something new is blurred. Somehow, order results from chaos, allowing his work to remain sophisticated and fresh.”

Piehl’s work has been exhibited across the U.S., and is included in many public and private collections, including:  Plains Art Museum, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Microsoft Corporation, Minnesota Museum of Art, Philbrook Museum of Art, RCA Records, Time Equities, Pillsbury Collection, Piper Jaffray, the University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, and University of Nevada.
