Alex G. Spaulding Although it’s difficult to tell from a cursory glance, Alex G. Spaulding’s machine-like sculptures are made from clay. The artist collects and is inspired by early to mid 2oth century metal equipment and apparatus. He states “I often manipulate the surface of my work to emulate surfaces found on these objects be they cast in iron, burnished steel, weathered copper, rusty metal or even painted metal . . . These items are interesting not only because of their form, but the fact that they are older than me suggests a sort of implied wisdom that the objects themselves seem to exude. The raw toil they endured through the years adds strength to the objects and that is often interpreted in my work.” Alex G., a former bridgetender for the Union Pacific Railroad in St. Paul, holds a degree in art from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. His work has been exhibited at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin, Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis and the Minnesota Museum of American Art, St. Paul. |
