Sequoia Miller Sequoia Miller was raised in Maine and earned a degree in Russian Cultural Studies from Brandeis University. After graduation, he pursued the study of ceramics at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts and the Archie Bray Foundation working with noted potters Douglass Rankin, Will Ruggles, Michael Simon, Linda Christianson and MacKenzie Smith. Now based in Olympia, WA, he has been a full-time studio potter since 1998. Sequoia maintains a busy schedule of invitational and juried exhibitions across the country and is a frequent visiting artist and instructor. His work was included as part of the recent PBS Craft in America project and has been featured in Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times. “In my pottery,” states the artist, “I explore the tension between the intuitive and the rational. I start my pots on a treadle wheel, and finish them by altering the shape to have edges and corners. Throwing is my intuitive process and altering is my rational process.”
