S. C. Rolf “My work employs the physical process of layering which describes a sense of growth of the pot, both inward and outward. The addition and subtraction of the material leave a record of time in the work,” states potter S.C. Rolf. “As a maker of one-of-a-kind functional objects, I use the premise that I transmit feeling through the subtle touch in working. I feel that in order for the use to ‘get it’ they must also touch the work. Therefore, my pieces are not metaphors for landscape and feeling, but rather they are the landscape and they embody the feeling.” The artist holds an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics. He has been a studio potter in River Falls, WI since 1998 and was a frequent award winner at the annual Minnesota Craft Council Festival. He participates in exhibitions at galleries nationwide and is an instructor at schools and art centers across Minnesota and Wisconsin. S.C.’s work is represented in several public collections including those of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Garth Clark Gallery in New York City, and, the artist notes, in “numerous kitchen cupboards.”
