John Knudsen

John Knudsen’s lively, complex compositions are characteristic of his prints as well as his paintings. He renders his subjects with a feeling of immediacy and movement. John has worked extensively with engraving, woodcuts and lithographs, exploring the possibilities of each process in the context of his interest in human behavior and the human form, animal studies, landscape and - most distinctively - urban life.

"I consider myself a painter first but have always had a special affection for printmaking,” John explains. “It all started in my mid-teens with a piece of linoleum. As I progressed in my career I found the aforementioned media complimented my painting beautifully.”

John is a graduate of Luther College and earned an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa. He studied with printmakers Mauricio Lasansky and Stanley William Hayter and was himself a longtime instructor at Harper College in Illinois. His work has frequently been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.

John maintains a workshop and gallery in Union Pier, MI. He was represented in St. Paul for many years by The Grand Hand’s friend and collaborator, Tim Duggan of River Gallery.
