Guillermo Cuellar

A native of Venezuela, Guillermo worked as an environmentalist before establishing a pottery studio in the village of Turgua in 1986. After meeting potter Warren MacKenzie, who was teaching in nearby Caracas, Guillermo also began to teach and assist at workshops given by MacKenzie and other American potters including Linda Christianson, Randy Johnston and Jan McKeachie, and Mark Pharis. He also founded Grupo Turgua, a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the work of Venezuelan craftstpeople.

Guillermo now resides in Shafer, Minnesota. When not working in his recently completed home studio, he conducts wilderness tours in Peru, Chile and Argentina.

The potter’s work incorporates the stylistic and utilitarian aspects of his international influences. “I make everyday pots to live with in the home, objects that contribute to the texture of daily life,” says Guillermo. “In simple pieces like teapots, coffee cups or cereal bowls, I relish the delightful, surprising interaction of elements and forms of diverse origins. I hope the pots provide as much enjoyment in their use as the excitement and anticipation they bring me in the making.”
