Anne E. Elias

Anne Elias is a Minnesota artist who works in an extraordinary range of mediums.  Originally trained as a sculptor at the University of Minnesota and the Rhode Island School of Design, Anne’s interests and talents have led her to create, study, teach and exhibit work in the fields of drawing, painting, sculpture, film, photography, poetry, installation, dance and other performance art.  She considers herself an interdisciplinary artist, and frequently combines mediums in her art endeavors.

“I choose certain elements for their raw qualities, and I choose to work with diversity in elements.”

Anne’s work – in all of its many forms – has been exhibited both regionally and nationally at galleries and museums including the Walker Art Center, Southern Theatre, Minneapolis Institute of Art, University of Memphis Art Museum, University of Minnesota, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, the Knitting Factory (New York), the Museum of Art of the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University Bell Gallery, and the New York Experimental Glass Workshop.  She has taught sculpture, drawing, performance art, design, studio arts and color theory at the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, Rhode Island School of Design, and St. Cloud State University.

A Minnesota native, Anne grew up in a large, multi-talented family in Mendota Heights.

“… on the edge of what was once a farm, a field, a swamp – a dead end street with nine kids running wild.  We were the Elias’s – a baseball team, a gang, a garage band, a theatre troupe, an army.  My earliest accomplishments were survival skills, the strongest and deepest of which serve me still: creative thinking, embrace dirt, listen, know and seek silence, accept chaos, know loyalty, earn a living, know when to leave.”
